Course Overview
This one-day face-to-face session combines three essential units of competency, namely PUAFER005, PUAFER006, and PUAFER008. Participants will gain comprehensive skills and knowledge crucial for effectively responding to facility emergencies, ensuring the safety of occupants, and mastering first attack firefighting techniques.
Unit PUAFER005 - Operate as Part of an Emergency Control Organisation: This unit focuses on equipping participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to actively participate in an Emergency Control Organisation during a facility emergency. Topics covered include understanding emergency response procedures, identifying hazards, communicating effectively during emergencies, and making informed decisions to safeguard occupants.
Unit PUAFER006 - Lead an Emergency Control Organisation: Building upon the foundational skills from PUAFER005, this unit empowers participants to take on a leadership role within an Emergency Control Organisation during a facility emergency. The course delves into advanced decision-making, coordination of emergency response efforts, and effective communication strategies to ensure the orderly and safe evacuation of occupants.
Unit PUAFER008 - Confine Small Emergencies in a Facility: This unit focuses specifically on developing the skills and knowledge required to confine small emergencies within a facility. Participants will learn about first attack firefighting techniques, including the use of firefighting equipment, identifying and assessing the scope of small emergencies, and implementing appropriate response measures to prevent the escalation of incidents.
Combined Learning Experience: Through interactive simulations, practical exercises, and scenario-based training, participants will have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world emergency response situations. The course emphasises the importance of clear communication, efficient decision-making, and teamwork in managing various emergency scenarios.

- Wardens’ responsibilities in evacuation procedures

8:45 AM – 9:45 AM: Leading an Emergency Control Organization (1 hour)

- Chief Fire Warden responsibilities
- Developing an emergency plan
- Command and control during an evacuation
- Decision-making under pressure
- Evacuation coordination and leading the Emergency Control Organization (ECO)

9:45 AM – 10:00 AM: Morning Break (15 minutes)
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Fire Emergency Procedures & Evacuation Plans (1 hour)

- Practical Drill: Conducting a mock evacuation in teams
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Fire Extinguisher Use & Fire Suppression (1 hour)

- Types of fire extinguishers and their correct uses
- PASS (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) technique for fire extinguishers
- Fire classifications (A, B, C, D, E, F)
- Limitations of fire extinguishers
- Practical: Hands-on training in using fire extinguishers
12:00 PM – 12:30 PM: Lunch Break (30 minutes)
12:30 PM – 1:30 PM: Fire Suppression and Containment Techniques (1 hour)

- Fire containment methods
- Identifying safe and unsafe areas during a fire
- Hazardous materials and flammable substances
- Practical: Handling small fires with extinguishers and blankets
1:30 PM – 2:30 PM: Emergency Evacuation Practical Scenario (1 hour)
- Coordinated mock evacuation involving all participants
- Fire Warden and Chief Fire Warden roles demonstrated
- Using communication equipment and reporting channels
- Debrief after the drill: Lessons learned and feedback
2:30 PM – 2:40 PM: Afternoon Break (10 minutes)
2:40 PM – 3:30 PM: Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (50 minutes)
- Identifying fire hazards in the workplace

3:30 PM – 3:45 PM: Review, Questions, and Close (15 minutes)

Prerequisites
PUAFER005 Operate as part of an emergency control organisation is a pre-requisite for PUAFER006 - Lead an emergency control organisation.
You will need:
- Unique Student Identifier (USI)
- 100 points ID (e.g. Passport & drivers licence 0R Birth Certificate & drivers licence -check web for combinations OR check online for other options). One must be a photo ID.
Certification
Upon satisfactory completion of assessment participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency PUAFER006 - Lead an emergency control organisation.
