Course Overview
In the field of civil construction, the primary focus when working in confined spaces is on creating a safe environment to enter and work rather than relying on personal protective equipment (PPE) like breathing apparatus. The emphasis is on implementing higher-level control measures to mitigate risks and ensure safety. Breathing apparatus is not commonly part of confined space work in civil construction due to the following reasons:

Elimination of Hazards: The first step is to eliminate any hazards present in the confined space. This could involve cleaning and ventilating the area to remove toxic substances or contaminants.

Substitution: Where possible, replacing hazardous substances or practices with safer alternatives is preferred. For example, using non-toxic cleaning agents or performing tasks from outside the confined space.

Engineering Controls: Implementing engineering controls to modify the environment and reduce hazards is crucial. This can include ventilation systems to ensure a supply of fresh air and the installation of barriers or protective systems to prevent exposure to hazards.

Administrative Controls: Establishing robust administrative controls, such as safe work procedures, training, and supervision, helps manage risks. Regular monitoring of the atmosphere within the confined space and having emergency procedures in place are essential components.

Isolation: Isolating the confined space from hazards by physically blocking or disconnecting hazardous energy sources, such as electrical, mechanical, or hydraulic systems, is a critical safety measure.
By focusing on these higher-level control measures, the need for PPE, such as breathing apparatus, is significantly reduced. Relying on PPE is considered the lowest measure in the hierarchy of control because it does not eliminate the hazard but rather provides a last line of defense. Therefore, the course emphasises making the confined space safe to enter and work through comprehensive hazard management and control measures rather than relying on breathing apparatus for rescue operations.

PUASAR025 Undertake Confined Space Rescue
This one-day intensive course is designed for participants who have successfully completed the initial training and are seeking to deepen their knowledge and skills in confined space rescue. This course focuses on , safety protocols, advanced rescue techniques and the use of specialized equipment, excluding breathing apparatus. The training is practical and hands-on, ensuring participants are well-prepared to handle complex rescue scenarios within the limitations of their available equipment.
Prerequisites
The below units must be completed prior to Day two.
RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces (training.gov.au)
MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit (training.gov.au)
MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres (training.gov.au)
HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Training.gov.au)
You will need:
- Unique Student Identifier (USI)
- 100 points ID (e.g. Passport & drivers licence 0R Birth Certificate & drivers licence -check web for combinations OR check online for other options). One must be a photo ID.
Certification
Upon satisfactory completion of assessment participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency.
