About this course
Course Overview
This course/licence/ticket is designed for individuals seeking to acquire the skills and knowledge required to operate an excavator safely and efficiently in a civil construction environment. It covers the essential aspects of excavator operations, including planning and preparing for operations, conducting machine pre-checks, operating the excavator, lifting, carrying and placing materials, and carrying out machine operator maintenance. The course is aligned with national regulatory requirements for operating heavy machinery and aims to foster responsible, safety-conscious operators who can contribute effectively to their workplaces.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Operate an excavator safely and effectively in various civil construction scenarios.
- Comply with all relevant safety guidelines, regulations, and operational procedures.
- Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on excavators.
- Communicate effectively with site personnel and contribute to a safe and efficient workplace.
The course duration is typically 1-3 days, including both theoretical instruction and practical training and is dependant on the current experience and skill of the participant. Experienced and skilled operators will be ready for Assessment on Day one and Novice operators will need more time to develop their knowledge and skills and may Attempt assessment on the 2nd or 3rd day. Delivery formats may vary between intensive workshops, part-time schedules, or customised training programs to suit employer and participant needs.
Prerequisites
Participants must be at least 18 years old.
Valid driver’s license
Physical fitness to handle the demands of operating heavy machinery.
Participants should have a basic understanding of construction or mining operations and general induction training or a White Card.
If loading/unloading on to or from a truck trailer or float RIIHAN308F Load and unload plant or equivalent is required
You will need:
- Unique Student Identifier (USI)
- 100 points ID (e.g. Passport & drivers licence 0R Birth Certificate & drivers licence -check web for combinations OR check online for other options). One must be a photo ID.
Certification
RIIMPO320F - Conduct civil construction excavator operations (including a wallet PTA pocketcard)
This competency can form part of a full qualification from
- Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations

Course Duration
One day Experienced Operator Assessment: Participants who have a minimum of 60 hours of operating an Excavator within the last twelve months (which can be verified by an employer reference)
